Model Forest Policy Program

What We Do

Local leaders from over 1000 cities and 36 counties have signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, committing their community to designing and implementing climate protection measures. MFPP provides climate conscious communities with sound forest policy recommendations and sustainable forestry educational tools that integrate ecological integrity with economic benefits. We provide an active communication network that connects you to professional policy advisors, current publications, new laws, and enables a rich exchange of information among participants and stakeholders.

Our database of archived publications, facts sheets, power point presentations, and other materials explain ways that proactive forest policy and practices create economic opportunities, sustains jobs and supports a healthy environment for your communities and states.

Our Local Government Case Studies: online, you can follow step by step these pilot projects of creating climate resilient communities. In the Pacific Northwest, and Southeast, we are providing local leaders with illustrations of how to address climate change solutions at the local level. Local citizens are learning how to form a Land Use Subcommittee and assessing local climate vulnerabilities of water and forest conditions. Our team of expert foresters, attorneys, and scientists is helping draft climate sensitive land use codes, providing professional advice, and analysis of forested watershed conditions. Results of this 2 year process will be condensed into essential lessons learned and made available to communities around the country. But until then, you can gain valuable tools online as we conduct these pilot projects.

Our policy recommendations:

  • Protect water resources,

  • Maximize carbon sequestration,

  • Preserve habitat,

  • Provide profitable, ecologically sustainable forestry for private landowners,

  • Protect public assets, and

  • Improve rural economies.
