Model Forest Policy Program

Local Government Case Studies:

Forest and Water Climate Solutions

City of Cookeville and Putnam County Tennessee

The City of Cookeville and Putnam County lie at the edge of the Appalachian Mountains in the Highlands area of Middle Tennessee. Known for its laid-back lifestyle, ample outdoor recreation activities and southern hospitality, Cookeville faces the challenge of preserving its rich environmental resources while supporting a rapidly growing population, and rich economic development.

The Community Stewardship Project is a joint effort between the City of Cookeville, Putnam County and the Model Forest Policy Program with support from the Merck Family Fund, Patagonia and the Cumberland River Compact. The goal of the Community Stewardship Project is to bring together a group of community leaders to learn, research and provide recommendations to government officials in an effort to conserve and preserve the quality of the upper Cumberland's.

The Community Stewardship Project is focused on three areas: Forest, Water, and Climate Change. Through 2009, the Community Stewardship Project will work to identify potential problem areas, draft recommendations for solutions, and create awareness of changes in the local environment. The initial focus of the Community Stewardship Project will be on water, including the Caney Fork River and Center Hill Lake. Additional focus areas include forest and land use, climate change resiliency and karst geography.

The Community Stewardship project meets on the first and third weeks of each month. The group also provides monthly educational sessions for specific groups and the general public. Please follow our progress via Twitter at www.twitter.com/mfpp or on Facebook under the "Community Stewardship Project."
